Jewish contribution to India's culture goes back to over a thousand years. One of the earliest settlement was in Kodungallor, Kerala where the Maharaja Parkaran Iravi Vanmar officially created a city for the Jews and gave full control to their leader Joseph Rabin in 379 AD. according to Kochi Jews. The Jews in Kodungallor were expelled by the Moors first and then by the Portugese. These incidents compelled the Jews to go to Cochi Maharaja for shelter. Cochi Maharaja created Jew Town in 1567 and built the Synagogue next to his palace and the Hindu Temple in 1568. The Jewish community was under the Maharaja's protection until India became independant and a republic. India may be the only place in the world where Jews never experienced persecution. These photos were taken from the paintings in the Temple that showed the sequence of the events.
